What AI Analytics Actually Do Well
Motion-based alerts flood a guard's screen with false positives — a blowing leaf, a passing cat, headlights sweeping a wall at night. AI analytics filter for actual events: a person crossing a defined line, a vehicle parked too long in a fire lane, a queue building past a threshold at a gate. That filtering is the real win — fewer alerts, but each one worth looking at.
License Plate Recognition Earns Its Keep at Gates
ANPR cameras paired with your barrier system log every vehicle in and out automatically, flag blacklisted plates, and remove the need for a guard to manually note down numbers in a register. For any site with regular vehicle traffic, this is one of the fastest-paying-back AI features available.
Where AI Still Falls Short
Context is the gap. AI can tell you a person is in a restricted zone; it can't tell you whether that person is a lost delivery driver or an actual threat. Lighting changes, reflections, and unusual camera angles still trip up detection models more than vendors admit. And every analytic feature needs the camera positioned and calibrated correctly — a great algorithm pointed at a badly placed camera still produces garbage.
The Infrastructure Reality
AI analytics aren't free at the network level. Real-time analysis needs either edge-capable cameras or an NVR with enough processing power, plus storage sized for continuous high-resolution recording, not just motion-triggered clips. Budget for the compute, not just the camera.
The right model isn't "AI replaces guards" — it's AI filtering the noise so the guards you do have are looking at the handful of events that actually matter.
Where a Trained Guard Still Wins
Judgment calls — is that person's body language actually threatening, does this situation need de-escalation, is a genuine emergency in progress — are still a human skill. No analytics package replaces that, and none of the vendors we work with claim otherwise.
